🇨🇿 Legal framework in 2026

✅ What is legally allowed (for adults 21 and older)

  • Possession: You may legally possess up to 25 g of dried cannabis in public without penalty. 

  • Possession at home: You may have up to 100 g of dried cannabis at your private residence. 

  • Home cultivation: You may grow up to 3 cannabis plants at a property you own or legally use. 
    These changes came into effect 1 January 2026 as part of a criminal-law reform. 

Important: these reforms no longer make small possession a crime if within the limits above. 

🚫 What still is not legal

❌ No legal cannabis sales or retail shops

There are no legal dispensaries, coffeeshops, or cannabis shops where you can buy high-THC cannabis in Prague like in the Netherlands or Canada. The commercial sale of recreational weed remains prohibited nationwide. 

That means:

  • Any shop claiming to sell high-THC cannabis is operating illegally. 

CBD products and low-THC hemp items are legal and widely sold, but these do not have the same effects as recreational weed and are not a replacement for high-THC cannabis. 

🚑 Medical cannabis

Medical cannabis has been legal in the Czech Republic for years, and since April 2025 general practitioners can prescribe it for qualifying patients. It can be dispensed at pharmacies with a prescription. 

This is a regulated legal channel, but it’s only available if you are under Czech medical care and have a doctor’s prescription — not a casual tourist purchase.

Even with the 2026 changes:

  • Possessing more than 25 g in public or more than 100 g at home can still lead to fines or criminal charges depending on amount and circumstances. 

  • Selling, supplying, or distributing cannabis to others remains a criminal offense with serious penalties. 

  • Public consumption is restricted and can lead to sanctions—even within permitted possession limits.

For residents:

  • You cannot legally buy it in a store; you must grow your own or have medical supply. 

For tourists / visitors:

  • You cannot legally purchase cannabis in Prague because no legal retail market exists. 

  • You can legally possess up to 25 g if you acquire it elsewhere, as long as it stays under that limit — but acquisition itself is still illegal to facilitate without a legal channel. 

  • Consuming privately (e.g., in your accommodation) is less likely to result in trouble than public use, but local bylaws and hotel rules still apply.

    Prague is weed friendly city, but there are no coffeeshops or other stores where you could buy high quality herbs.At the same time there are a lot of street dealers trying to sell weed, coke, MDMA.
