As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, Mexico was in the process of reforming its cannabis laws. The legal landscape regarding cannabis was undergoing significant changes, including the decriminalization of small amounts of cannabis for personal use and the potential regulation of recreational cannabis.
Here is a summary of the situation in Mexico, including Cancún, based on the information available up to September 2021:
Decriminalization: In Mexico, possession of small amounts of cannabis for personal use was decriminalized. The specific limits for personal possession varied by state, but it generally involved possession of up to 5 grams of cannabis. Possession of amounts exceeding this limit could still result in legal consequences, such as fines.
Medical Cannabis: Mexico legalized medical cannabis in 2017. Patients with specific medical conditions can access medical cannabis products with a doctor’s prescription. Regulations for medical cannabis were in place, and licensed pharmacies were authorized to dispense medical cannabis.
Recreational Use: As of my last update, the recreational use of cannabis was not yet fully legalized at the federal level in Mexico, but there were significant changes on the horizon. Mexico’s Supreme Court had issued several rulings deeming the prohibition of recreational cannabis use unconstitutional, which put pressure on lawmakers to develop regulations for legalizing recreational use. It was anticipated that regulations for recreational use might be established in the near future.

Someone may approach you and attempt to sell you weed. You might also ask around at hawkers selling tobacco accessories. They can help you sort things out or put you in the proper way. After dusk, travel to the city’s nightlife hotspots. Consult bartenders and club promoters. Cannabis is easily accessible in Cancun. If you see someone smoking, approach them and ask them what they are smoking.
